A Pebble for Your Thoughts

It drops
A pebble thought
Spinning circles through
This fractured heart
Some pieces cannot
Be pushed together
Magnetic poles in
Opposition pushing
Away the tethers
That used to bind
Yet my mind
Stubbornly tries
To find
Where the pieces
Might fit
Wonders why
The shapes changed
Won't accept that
Some things
Can't be explained
And the pebbles
Keep falling
Like the rain

This is offered for Alan's prompt at Poetry Jam poetryjaam.blogspot.com to write about pebbles. (I love pebbles!) It's also inspired by last week's prompt to write about something broken.  I have a hard time letting go of things I love--that have broken--picture frames with a favorite photo, a missing earring from a favorite pair, friendships that for one reason or another ship-wreck.  I don't pursue the friendship once it's gone, but my brain seems to get stuck sometimes trying to sort out what happened...Hope that you're on happier thoughts today and that it's a lovely week :-)

  1. first, the thought of a pebble rain storm sounds a bit painful...smiles...true though on how somethings can not be put back together...i do believe in restoration though, or the hope...if we can figure out what happened maybe we wont make the same mistakes too, you know...

  2. So true that some things can't be explained. I know what you mean about friendships....sometimes they quietly fall away, like pebbles, and after a while we wonder...

Glad to see you, Sara; and I did fix your link.

  3. Sara,

A great connection between pebbles and the sad thoughts which arrive..Sometimes we seem to have as many problems, as there are pebbles...Friendships and their problems, are unending considerations, as with raindrops...

  4. Letting go is a weird process. Sometimes it is easy, sometimes hard. But it is definitely easier to let go of things than of friendships and not wonder why and what if.

    1. Hi Gabriella! You're absolutely right. The older I get, the easier it is to let go of things, but not friends.

  5. Sara, a question. Why no punctuation? Do you think that it gives the reader more scope with creating a more personal experience?

    1. Hi Pea! I like to leave my readers breathless ;-). Seriously though, I enjoy the flow of thought. I use commas to separate things and thoughts if they're in the same line, otherwise I use line breaks. And it does seem to bring more varied readings which I enjoy as well. Thank you for asking :-)

  8. Thoughts as pebbles raining down...constant questioning in a bid to find answers...acceptance is the best solution. Nice poem.

  9. I think it is hope that makes us keep holding on and trying to figure out what happened despite the pebbled rain.

  10. Pebbles hold a bit of geological eternity as will as the memory of the day they were plucked off a beach and so, I think, they hold a certain fascination. They are simple - yet mysterious and thus, conjure forth a plethora of visceral responses and memories that evoke a kind of expectation from them, as though, they process some sort of talisman like charm . . . which you have captured perfectly here, Sara.

    1. Hi Rae! I almost didn't include that line, because I had the same "ouch" thought, but I liked the image, so I went with it...thank you for affirming that decision :-)

  14. Sometimes you have to get a firm umbrella so the pebbles will bounce off...

  16. i know the feel of trying to hold something together that drifts apart with all might... think we first have to deal with the source and reasons and then - if both are willing - there's hope to put the pieces back together...

  17. Those pebbles, if they are meant to be set free, may spin and crack and form shards. Like kidney stones. The trick is to keep the good, smooth pebbles (thoughts, ideas, spirit) spinning in perfect synchronicity. Loved this one, and thx for visiting my blog! amy
