Etymology
Good bye from godbwye (1570s), itself a contraction of God be with ye (late 14c.), influenced by good day, good evening
If it doesn't fit
Or causes me strife
Shortens my life
Those two words
Come easily
But to those I
Love and hold dear
I'm loathe to either
Say or hear
Those two words
Thought I might get inspired by the etymology, (love that stuff) but didn't happen...amazing how much emotion is in those two words! And then there's kids saying goodbye to classes :-) Whooo Hooo! Written for the prompt of "Goodbye" at Poetry Jam poetryjaam.blogspot.com and shared with Poetry Pantry at Poets United poetry blogroll.blogspot.com
i hear you...there are def somethings...and some people....we have to say goodbye to in order to really live our life....but when they matter, its hard to say for sure...smiles
ReplyDeletehope you have a great start to the week
very very nice, sara. Glad to "meet" you.
ReplyDeleteSara, it is interesting to see that "goodbye" comes from....... (Can't write that spelling, as my spell check keeps auto correcting. Sigh.) I like your theory....if something causes you strife, say the word; but not with those you love!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking part in both Poetry Pantry AND Poetry Jam!!
Amazing it's God be with you! And yes, it can be good at the end of school. We get out this Friday? What about y'all?
ReplyDeleteVery interesting origin of goodbye...You are right... two words we do not want to hear from our loved ones.
ReplyDeleteLove what you did with the prompt ... have a great week!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting where goodbye comes from. any strife or shortens ones life always good time to say goodbye! We say goodbye to school next week. Hello summer!
ReplyDeletethere are good byes that come easy over the lips and others that rip the heart out of your chest - sometimes there's no choice though...tough and felt
ReplyDeleteGoodbye is a difficult word to loved ones. Really lovely words and heart felt poem.
ReplyDeleteI know Liebster Award is not a palpable award. There are no judges, no special rules. No website with an official team to congratulate you and hold your hand while making pictures. It's mostly what you want it to be. If you receive the award, you can accept it and pass it along or you can ignore it. It's that easy and totaly up to you.
ReplyDeleteI don't know your ratings who cares about ratings anyway, so, I hope nobody gets offended since this is just a recognition from one blogger to another for how awesome they are. Kind of like a really big virtual hug!
