Sweet Nothings

Billions of voices
Rise into the stratosphere
Yet in that thin air
They all disappear
The cries, speeches,
Laughter, shrieks
Stretch, flatten into
Mere wisps floating in
The abyss of dark space
Perhaps a star or comet
Might snag a vowel
Or consonant and keep it
Hanging by its stem or
Snuggled in its orbit
Humming sweet nothings
In harmony
With the uni-verse

A poem prompted by Mary's invitation at Poetry Jam poetryjaam.blogspot.com to write a poem inspired by Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" a song that has always inspired me with it's amazing words "like silent raindrops fell"  but always left me with a sense of deep sadness "ten thousand people...people writing songs that voices never shared..."   So, started in one direction ended up in another...:-)  Enjoy!

  1. I enjoyed this, Sara. My dad always told me that once a sound was made it just kept traveling. Your poem expresses this as well...so many sounds rising into the universe. What an interesting chorus of sounds there must be 'up there.'

    1. Funny thing, I was driving to work and that little subconscious that double-checks me in the background said "Hey! you forgot to link!" I'm linked now--thank you :-)

  3. nice....ok, bizarre link...it made me think of there be no screaming in space....i think that came from a very old horror movie...lol...the rising of voices to disappate to silence is pretty cool though...happy thursday!

    1. Hi Brian! Actually you're right, my amateur astrophysical son told me that sound needs matter to exist and that in space there is no matter so theoretically no sound. The sounds from Earth bounce back and forth from the atmosphere to earth until they dissipate. That would have been an interesting poem! :-)

  6. I guess that's how it is in cyber space. I like the idea of a comet snagging a vowel or consonant and humming sweet harmony.

    1. Hi Laurie! Thank you, I was thinking how lonely it is in space and nothing like a little vowel to keep you company, inspire a song or two:-)

  11. I thought this was quite brilliant...the way you captured the silence of space with a spasmodic little disconnected echo here and there...i imagine it would just be like that...very very good!

  12. Immaculate!! Echoes are rhythmical music, and they provide acoustic support to singers!!But, how magically you captured the silence here..
    "Perhaps a star or comet
    Might snag a vowel
Or consonant and keep it"--Perhaps, this is how echoes fade away.
    Lovely poem.

  16. ...sweet nothings & the beauty in silence.... and you smiled for no reason... it just happened like you never intended it... that sometimes our heart responds when it feels / hears / sees / smells beauty that is beyond admiration... and it's called 'appreciation'... smiles... see i felt it here... good day!
