Really?

It might have been the broad shoulders
Maybe the Roman nose
Or winning grin
And taller than me
Sat behind me in Spanish class
Was so dreamy
Felt a little chemistry
Then Mono hit me--two weeks
Tossed and turned in fever, sure
That I'd lost my chance
Instead, the day I returned
He asked me to the Homecoming Dance
In shock, I squeaked a “yes”
And he answered, “Really?”
As they say, the rest...
Was typical high school romance
Doomed before it's through
But for that single moment
It was a dream come true

Written for the prompt, “Moment that impacted you” for poetryjaam.blogspot.com; Openlink night at dversepoets.com and Poetic Bloomings prompt #72—first love
This was the first true love, took a few more frogs before I figured things out, but as they say, you never forget your “first” :-)

    1. Hi Brian!! That has to make you smile--it is uplifting and the fall is harsh, but as someone once said, a broken heart has more room...just doesn't feel like it at the time...:-)

    1. Hi Mary :-), so good to see you. Yes, those are capitalized, bold-faced moments. So many crushes had gone unrequited and then this golden boy...about made my face split from smiling...

    1. Hi Laurie! Oh yes, drama in abundance. I've been living through plenty with my boys. At least with girls you can commiserate with chocolate or something...boys just shut down and hide. (shouldn't generalize--mine shut down and hid...) ;-)

  18. I still day dream about my first (blushing as I type those words.) Interesting fact, I am still friends with both he and his wife (who sometimes looks at me a bit skeptically.) But it's all good ~~~ like your poem good.

    1. Helen, thank you so much for sharing that!! That is hilarious :-) (about the wife looking at you skeptically) What a wonderful thing to still be friends. I just saw my "first" at a recent reunion, so funny, trying not to make a big deal out of seeing him--still awkward after all these years--sheesh.

I have to tell her to keep her mind focused on her work and not how lovely the boy is! *Rolls eyes*
This was a lovely read, made me smile...thank you :)
