I was
prepared to love her
Better
than anyone
Ever,
ever, ever
Loved
a sister
Never
Fight
like other sisters
We
Were
going to be
Perfectly
happy
Except
it took
A
while
(Okay,
an eternity)
To me
Finally
At
eight years to her three
We
Hoppity-hopped
And
read
Shared
nightmares and
A bed
Barbies,
Candy Land, coloring books,
Backseat
buddies, side by side
For
every trip we took
Till
I moved three thousand
Miles
away
Now
we have phone calls
Instead
of Barbie play
Dealing
with grown up fears
Laughing,
not hiding tears
And
that little girl prepared to
Love
and to be sweet
Is so
happy to find that sister love
Travels
a two way street

smiles...it is great that you have that kind of relationship with your sister...and that love goes both ways...even across the miles...very cool...
ReplyDeletemy sis and i had a tough several years, but mended fences about 8 years ago now and i am glad we did...
Hi Brian!! It took awhile--5 years difference is big when you are 12 and 17...but now, it's like there's no age gap. So happy for you that you were able to mend those fences. Family are the only people who know you better than anyone. :-)
Deletethis is lovely and reminds me of my daughters...they're so close and i wonder how they keep up their relationship once they both live many miles apart probably.. i had a brother and we're ok with each other but never had that close relationship
ReplyDeleteHi Claudia!! So happy for you that your daughters are close, it's wonderful to see--my sons are pretty close; kinda have their own language/humor, though very different in their personalities. We shall see. Thank you :-)
DeleteThis is so sweet ... loved it !!!
ReplyDeleteHi G.S.!! Thank you so much, glad that you enjoyed it--not one of my easiest writes, a lot to say and couldn't say it all :-)
DeleteHeart-warming read. Very well penned, my friend.
ReplyDelete" Is so happy to find that sister love
Travels a two way street. " - My favourite lines.
Hi! Welcome--that is one of my favorite lines too, thank you so much for the visit :-)
DeleteTouching write...settings change, love remains.
ReplyDeleteHi Jack!! I wish I would have thought of that line--it sums that poem up perfectly :-) Thank you!
DeleteI only have brothers so always envy those sisterly connections! How lucky for both of you!
ReplyDeleteHi Robyn!! So nice to see you again. Brothers have their own magic--or so it seems, when I watch my sons :-) I do feel lucky--thank you
DeleteBeautiful poem. I am glad that despite the distance it does not change the depth of your relationship. It is so easy just to drift apart gradually when one person moves. It sounds that neither of you will let that happen! Smiles.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary!! Yes, we were pretty determined to keep that bond--it's not always easy with distance, but thank goodness for phones and emails. Thank you for the smiles :-)
DeleteThis brought so many memories flooding back. Lovely write!
ReplyDeleteHi Audrey!! Happy to share good memories together--Thank you very much :-)
DeleteThere were only 10 months 3 weeks and one day in age that separates one of my sisters from me. We fought like cat and dog as kids, and yet, are probably the closest of all of our other brothers and sisters.
ReplyDeleteLoved this.
Hi Brenda!! I think that the closer in age you are, the more you fight--kinda hard to fight someone 5 years younger, though sniping was our weapon of choice--still we managed to stay close. Thank you for that share :-) Sisters are the best
DeleteHow sweet is sisterly love ~ No other love like this ~
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing ~
Hi Grace!! Very true :-) Thank you for visiting
DeleteA very moving poem, which kids us that we know (roughly) how it will end. But we don't. Nothing prepares us for that brilliant final couplet!
ReplyDeleteHi Dave!! You sure know how to make my day :-) Thank you for such a generous compliment!
DeleteI think the sisterhood bond grows tighter as we become adults. Love this, Sara!
ReplyDeleteHi Laurie!! Yes, with passage of time, the differences diminish and we're left with love and good memories
Delete:-)
Thank you very much!
I agree with Dave, this is very moving and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHi Keith!! Nice to see you again. Thank you for the lovely compliment--really enjoyed your thoughts on clouds :-)
DeleteWhat a beautiful poem. It reminds me of a song by Queen called "Sail Away Sweet Sister". The same lovely sentiments, minus the scraps. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Hi Cuban!! Thank you so much for that, there were scraps--just didn't fit into the flow of the poem. Thankfully, grew out of them :-)
DeleteAh. Just lovely. I can relate to this poem.
ReplyDeleteHi Margaret!! Happy to share some memories with you, sister are the best :-)
DeleteBeautifully nostalgic!
ReplyDeleteHi Mad!! Thank you very much--definitely nostalgic, once I got going--funny the things you remember :-)
